Accelerated Reader Program

All students will be required to participate in the Accelerated Reader Program. Meeting your AR goal each 9 weeks and maintaining an average above 90% is required at our school and counts as a major grade! Students who make their goal and maintain their average will be invited to the end of the 9 week AR party!

Within the first few weeks of school, your child will take a STAR test. This test will help determine your child's ZPD range. The ZPD range identifies the level of books each student should be reading. I will discuss with each child's individual point goals and average percent goal.

Once the goals are established, each student will be allowed to check out books independently from the library. Our kinder students will need help with testing to ensure their goal is met each 9 weeks. Parents are required to use the school library, PTA or Lab computers to take AR test (before or after school). AR testing can only be done within school hours (at school).

Students who are fluent readers will work at his/her own pace to ensure thorough reading of each book before testing on it. It is most important to carefully read the books because once a student takes an AR test, it can not be retaken! Students receive points toward their goal for each passing grade they receive. It is preferred that students make a 100 on each teat so they will not bring down their reading average percent. Students will be allowed to test on books whenever they are ready and as long as it's not during a time that I am teaching or during times when they are suppose to be completing classroom assignments.

If students are doing their nightly 20 minute reading and utilizing "free reading" time, each student should be able to accomplish his/her goals.

Please encourage and take the time to praise your child as he/she progresses through the nine weeks. Ask your child to tell you about the book they are reading. This will help them on the AR test. Also, ask about any AR tests that he/she may have taken that day. This shows your child that you are interested in their AR progress.

Parent Communication

I believe that communication between school and home is a vital part of your child's success. I send home a weekly newsletter each week. In the newsletter will be homework and information you need to know. Please check your child's take home folder daily. I will also communicate with you through letters, e-mail, remind101, phone calls, behavior notes, schoolinsites, and conferences when necessary. Please don't hesitate to contact me with your questions and concerns. I try to check my home and school e-mail nightly. So, e-mail is a great avenue to reach me.

Homework Tips

Homework is a way to reinforce taught skills and to give extra practice so that the students begin to master particular skills. A great way to ensure that your child completes his/her homework is to establish a set routine. The following are suggestions to help in creating that routine.

Have a set time for homework. This may be right after school or after your child has had a snack and some time to relax.
Have a set location. You and your child can establish this together, but make it a consistent spot.
Have ample supplies (i.e. pencils, paper, eraser, pencil sharpener) in the homework spot.
Review your child's homework for quality work. Please reiterate neatness of homework to your child. It is acceptable to assist them in their homework and to correct mistakes. However, if he/she has great difficulty with a skill, please let me know so I can review the skill with him/her.

Classroom Parties

In the Montgomery Public Schools, we generally celebrate two holidays: Valentines and Christmas Holidays. There maybe a few other times throughout the year that we have celebrations that will need parental assistance as well. If you wish to be part of planning and assisting in these times, please let me know. My room mother/father usually plans the Valentine and Christmas parties.

Birthdays

Please do not distribute birthday invitations at school unless all class members are invited. Your child's birthday will be recognized at school. If you would like to celebrate your child's birthday at school please let me know atleast 3 days in advance.

Tests and Grading Policies

Your child will receive a grade in the following areas:

Reading
Math
Science
Social Studies
Grammar
Spelling
Handwriting
Physical Education
Conduct

Daily work and tests will be used to formulate the nine week grade for most subjects. You will receive signed papers so that you can monitor your child's progress throughout the grading period. The following grade scale will be utilized:

"A" - 90 - 100
"B" - 80 - 89
"C" - 70 - 79
"D" - 60 - 69
"F" - 59 and below
"G" - good
"S" - satisfactory
"H" - having difficulty

Occasionally you may see a check, check plus, or check minus on assignments. A check plus is equivalent to good, check is equivalent to satisfactory, and check minus is equivalent to having difficulty.

Student Absences

If your child is sick or you have a family emergency, please send a written note on the day he/she returns to school. If you know that your child will be missing school or if he/she has to be out for an extended time, please notify me as soon as possible. I will be happy to gather work assignments for the long-term absence. You can notify me through the school office or by e-mail.
